Jacen joined the School of Business Administration at Portland State University in 2013, after working as a volunteer and then a consultant with the Impact Entrepreneurs initiative. Prior to working at PSU, Jacen managed financial analysis, budgeting, and sustainability reporting for global social enterprise Sustainable Harvest; helped design the business model for Central City Coffee, which provides job training and employment to individuals who have previously experienced homelessness or addiction; and worked with or trained social entrepreneurs in Honduras, Nicaragua, India, Cambodia, and the United States.
At Portland State University, Jacen is the co-designer and manager of the online Business of Social Innovation Certificate, the first in the nation to combine professional and accredited academic certificates. He teaches or co-teaches three undergraduate/graduate courses in the program: Design Thinking for Social Innovation, Money Matters for Social Innovation, and Storytelling and Impact Measurement. He also teaches local and global field studies in social entrepreneurship, including the current Oregon Field Study and past social enterprise field studies in the US, India, and Cambodia. In addition, Jacen coaches members of PSU’s Social Innovation Incubator, including the founders of EcoZoom, My Street Grocery, and Elkarti Morocco.
Jacen’s articles have been published in the International Journal of Science, Mathematics and Technology Learning, and in the VentureWell 20th Annual Conference Proceedings. His case studies have been published in GlobaLens, Case Studies in Social Entrepreneurship and Sustainability, and the Oikos Case Quarterly, and he has written for Sustainable Business Oregon, Triple Pundit, and Real Leaders. In addition to planning the annual Elevating Impact Summit, he has presented or led workshops for the Fulbright Program, AmeriCorps VISTA, Net Impact Conference (2011), GoGreen PDX (2012), Trading at the River (2014), Ashoka U Exchange (2014, 2016), and VentureWell Open (2016), among others.
Jacen graduated Beta Gamma Sigma with an MBA in sustainability from Portland State University and magna cum laude with a B.A. in China Studies from Willamette University. He studied Chinese at Peking University as a Freeman Asia Scholar.
