Alexander Mertens

Alexander Mertens is professor of finance at National University of Kiev-Mohyla Academy and professor of economics and finance at International Institute of Business (IIB, Kyiv, Ukraine). He graduated summa cum laude from Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University (economics and mathematics) and received a PhD in Economics from the same university. He has also completed research internships at the London Business School, Bayes (formerly Cass) Business School, MacEwan University, Dalhousie University, and the World Bank Institute.
Throughout his career, Mertens has combined academic, management and consulting roles. Starting out as a scientist in the field of stochastic modeling of economic decisions, he then worked as an academic and practitioner in the fields of economics, financial markets, asset pricing, risk management, macroeconomics, corporate finance, and business modeling. His book Investments: Lectures on Modern Finance was the first widely recognized local textbook on investments in the post-Soviet Union space.
Committed to integrating academic activity with practical application, Mertens has also served as president and CEO at IIB, consultant at international firms such as the International Finance Corporation and DAI, and as top manager of an international oil and gas engineering company.
