This case portrays the challenges of a sole proprietor when his business advances from start-up to growth stage. Francisco Cruz, owner of Ione’s Dorm, has invested in expanding his dorm but now faces a host of internal and external challenges, from rent collection to outdated systems.  He starts to feel the limitations of his informal way of doing business as he grapples with the new operational challenges and external pressures of his growing business.

Teaching Objectives

After reading and discussing the material, students should:

  • Describe the different lifecycles of a business and identify the lifecycle in which Ione’s Dorm is operating.
  • Explain the challenges and hurdles faced by Cruz as he moves from the start-up phase to growth stages.
  • Develop a strategy that would enable Cruz to address his collection problem, the flight of residents who have overdue accounts, and other issues.
