Description

Russel Wisselink, a Senior Buyer for Trojan Technologies in London, Ontario, Canada, was working in crisis mode. Juntao Quartz Products, a Chinese company, the primary supplier of the custom quartz glass sleeves used to cover UV lamps, had just notified him that they were unable to supply a special crystal sleeve used for one of Trojan’s products. This case asks students to evaluate the potential of significant cost increases and potential shortfalls in parts supply.

Teaching Objectives

After reading and discussing the material, students should:

  • Help students understand some of the complex global and local issues involved with switching to global sourcing;
  • Foster discussion around different solution options;
  • Demonstrate the speed at which a crisis can arise.
