Description

Brian is faced with the decision to share a common glass as part of a cultural practice in Cebu, Philippines or stick with his professional training as a nurse delivering warnings against indirect contact transmission of communicable diseases. The case introduces students to Culture Care Diversity and Universality Theory. They are asked to put themselves in the shoes of the protagonist, make a decision, and support that decision based on professional and generic concepts of care.

Teaching Objectives

After reading and discussing the material, students should:

  • Define culture care and related terminologies.
  • Classify the different forms of nursing care decisions and actions.
  • Differentiate culture care universality from diversity.
  • Discriminate between culture care and professional care.
  • Employ the most appropriate care decisions and actions when confronted with a transcultural nursing dilemma.
