Description

Fifth Place Winner of the NextBillion 2011 Case Writing Competition Henry Smith, Director of New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity, has been encouraged by the Habitat for Humanity headquarters to begin building affordable, environmentally sustainable homes, which seem to be attracting much donor and foundation support. Smith must decide if and how to facilitate this new strategy, taking into account various questions: Can and should the New Orleans affiliate do both rehabilitation and environmental sustainability programs at once? What is the best way to implement it in New Orleans? Will this be consistent with the organization’s philosophy? The earliest uses for this case have been in MBA-level strategy courses, but it may also be useful in organizational change courses, sustainability and non-profit focused courses, and advanced undergraduate courses.

Teaching Objectives

After reading and discussing the material, students should:

  • determine the best way to implement sustainable building programs in New Orleans
  • go through the philosophical roots of the organization and decide what strategy is most consistent with the organizational philosophy
  • critically examine how that philosophy should be updated to accommodate a changing housing market.
